The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.

Overall, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song composed by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the actual play are available on Spotify and YouTube.
