The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
