New York's next mayor states he will live in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.
"The choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of focusing my full attention on enacting the affordability agenda the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and my work," he affirmed.
Political Debate
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.
But his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which ended in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for public city functions, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces what many can afford.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
