Milei Statuette, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unwanted gifts can be seen as somewhat rude – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Auction

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 gifts given to her by world leaders while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, together, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off to the highest bidder by a Italian fine art auction house. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the goal is to hold the auction by year's end, with the revenue donated to various charities.

Storage Room Treasures

These gifts are currently locked away in a storage room on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni additionally intending to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust over a long period.

A complete inventory remains officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The query centered on if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. According to regulation, a prime minister cannot take home presents worth more than €300.

An International Array of Gifts

The collection includes:

  • A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • An assortment including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with winning over international counterparts and positioning Italy as a significant player on the international platform once again.

The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to handle the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
