Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major boost to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
