Italian Consumer Group Criticizes Ski Pass Cost Increases as Completely Unjustified

A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they call completely unjustified price increases for lift tickets this cold-weather period, cautioning that skiing could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.

Significant Cost Rises Across Italy

From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the ski runs of central Italy, prices are set to rise by as much as 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to fresh research.

The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now set visitors back €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is expected to reach €60, following substantial visitor surges during the previous winter.

Seasonal Pass Costs and Additional Expenses

Meanwhile, seasonal ski passes will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to upwards of €1,800 in the Aosta valley.

The expense of hiring ski equipment has similarly risen, along with lodging costs and dining expenses throughout alpine destinations.

Consumer Group President Points to Unreasonable Hikes

Gabriele Melluso, heading the watchdog organization, stated that the cost rises—which operators blame on higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and requests for superior gear—were entirely unreasonable and not acceptable.

"Both because inflation in Italy are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for ski resort operators in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.

He added that prices have now reached levels where budget-conscious visitors are being forced to abandon their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, completely.

Tourism Decline and Wider Perspective

Melluso observed a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors hitting the slopes compared to the prior season due to increasing expenses.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austria.

Olympic Context

The growing concern over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between February 6 and 22. The nation's top diplomat, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations calling for a "global truce" during the global competition.

"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a peaceful communication and conversation... to halt conflicts during the Olympics," Tajani emphasized.
