Gas Detonation Takes 3 Law Enforcement Officers Amid Property Removal Procedure in Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and more than a dozen others sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the residence near Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who fled subsequent to the incident was apprehended soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.
The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the property turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.
Background and Motive
The leader of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.
Mediators had been sent to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents set off the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander stated to reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Incendiary devices were also located at the site, the minister said.
Impact Assessment
Injured individuals by the incident included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the blast had happened on a floor above the access point and told journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, adding that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the service of their country.
