'Enduring a Horrific Ordeal': Families of Missing Young People Await Information After Alpine Fire
The relatives of teens lost after a devastating inferno at a bar in a Switzerland's ski resort are facing an excruciating period of uncertainty for confirmed information and pleading for information about their children via social media.
The blaze devastated the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the mountains of south-west Switzerland, in the early hours of New Year's Day. Verified images show the ceiling being engulfed in flames as bottles with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have warned that it could take considerable time to identify the those who perished of the fire, which resulted in the death of 40 people and injured another 119. Officials said on the latest update that the majority of the injured have been identified, with efforts ongoing to name the remaining few.
In the waiting period, families and friends have been using the internet to request any news about their loved ones who were present at the venue that fateful night.
Appeals for the Missing
The location of teenager from Switzerland Arthur Brodard, 16, are not yet determined, according to an public plea from his family.
The resident of a town near Lausanne, explained to a local newspaper that she had returned to Lausanne to check whether he was in the hospital, while his father did the same in the capital, but did not locate him.
"This is a living nightmare, a horror. The options are finding my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's horrific," she stated.
She explained that some of his companions had been located with injuries covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italy's government has indicated that six of its citizens are still unaccounted for.
One of those is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage promising athlete, who hailed from Italy but now living in the UAE.
The national sporting body has released a tribute that he is dead, without mentioning the tragedy, honoring a "talented young man who represented passion and authentic values."
His father, told media that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around the new year. An official spokesperson has indicated that a official announcement of his death is awaited.
Additional Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise unaccounted for. His parent said that he had been on vacation but had ventured out with friends and ended up at the bar.
"A close friend told me they escaped after the fire broke out and that he had his phone with him, but then at a specific moment he they were separated," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his teachers commented, "He was known for his kindness and positive demeanor, combined with great maturity. He would frequently offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Swiss and Greek nationality but lives full-time in the country, was also present on that night, according to sources.
Her brother has posted an urgent request on social media, saying the relatives has had "no information" regarding the teenager or the group she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Officials from her country of origin say they are actively engaged with the case.
