Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded UK Technology to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Western Forces, Investigation Hears

A whistleblower has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK failed to secure classified devices allowing the militant group to locate Afghans who collaborated with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, known as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the data leak were instructed to relocate and alter their phone numbers to ensure their safety from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are currently examining official response of a catastrophic disclosure of private information concerning almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to move to Britain to avoid militant rule.

The Information Breach Occurred

An electronic document containing private information, including identities, contact details and in some cases household data, was mistakenly released by a staff member stationed at British military command in early 2022.

The breach came to light in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to settle in the UK appeared on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is a false assumption that the Taliban lack comparable resources that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire mobile details, they can locate your exact position. This is exactly how specialized teams accomplished.”

When questioned about if militant forces possessed advanced decryption, the source stated: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the investigation suggested that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction regarding the breach was implemented in last year and restricted all details regarding the matter from media reporting until mid-2025.

Protective Actions

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the aid group she collaborated with told affected households they were working with that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they change residence when possible and switched their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would result in them being traced,” Person A explained.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower argued that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to conclude that the possession of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to militant forces; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

Person A described terrible treatment endured by affected individuals, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of young kids who have had limbs fractured to pressure households to reveal locations,” she testified.
