Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
