A Ton of Japanese Animation Updates Arrived During the Festive Season
The winter break provide a multitude of pastimes much better than scanning the latest news: opening presents, getting stuffed on delicious food, and harnessing deep breathing to refrain from yelling at relatives. I hope you were able to do all these things and more. That said, the world of entertainment doesn't go on vacation, and this is especially true for the realm of anime. Numerous thrilling news items came out over the break, and should you didn't see a few, here is a compilation of the biggest bits.
The One-Punch Man Series Its Third Season Is Moving Forward (Come 2027)
Without a doubt the biggest announcement, the widely-criticized troubled production that was the third season of One-Punch Man failed to deter further production. The show will come back with a second cour in 2027—such a distant date they easily could have labeled it season 4. Adding to the surprise, the studio J.C. Staff will remain leading the project. Thankfully this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is on board to direct from the outset, which is seen as a positive development. But, the key visual for the new episodes is the same image the one used for season 3, just with protagonists Saitama and Garou facing different directions. This leads one to believe that, nowadays, they could be mocking the fans.
Ruri Dragon Is Poised to Be the Premiere Shonen Jump Anime From Kyoto Animation
Kyoto Animation has established a name for being an prestigious animation studio, distinguishing itself not just for the exceptional quality of its productions but for the fair treatment of its employees—a sadly unusual standard in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not adapted an anime stemming from a manga from Shonen Jump, perhaps the best-known magazine in the business. Ruri Dragon will break that tradition, and what a superb choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo achieved widespread acclaim when it debuted in 2022 after just a few chapters, but then went into a lengthy break due to the mangaka's health issues. When it resumed publication with a lighter schedule, the series showed it hadn't lost the fans' support and goodwill, and now the community is overjoyed about the impending KyoAni adaptation.
The Kingdom Series Season 6 Will Get a Sequel In Production
Kingdom is the best-selling, long-running Shueisha manga that is other than One Piece. If you've never heard of it before, it's because it only fairly recently obtained an English translation, but the anime has been airing for some time, and its sixth season was another outstanding entry. It turns out that was just the first half, because a "sequel" has been revealed as currently being made, and it will very likely air in 2026.
Science Saru Is Bringing A Witch in Mongolia To Anime
A further studio famous for the superior craftsmanship of its projects, Science Saru has given us masterpieces of the quality of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, most recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the actual historical person of Fatima, an prominent woman and thinker in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime called Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a highly unique and captivating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Debuting in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my list of anticipated shows.
The Tougen Anki Series Is Set to Continue With a Second Season
Shortly after the conclusion of the final episode of the first season, it was confirmed that Tougen Anki will be securing a second season. Inspired by the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki adapts the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will adapt the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a concrete release date has not yet been announced.
